Provechón El Matón 2023
Description

Bobal, known as Provechón in Calatayud, is quite irregular in its yields, and they only produced 1,100 bottles of the 2023 Provechón Viñas Viejas Parcela El Matón. It was produced with old-vine Bobal from a 0.41-hectare plot known as El Matón that was planted in 1938, and they believe it could be the oldest Bobal in Aragón, a grape usually found in field blends but rarely in separate plots. It fermented with uncrushed berries in Flextank where it matured with the lees for 20 months. It's juicy, primary and fruit-driven, with some earthy rusticity, still a bit raw. It has abundant, slightly dusty tannins—it needs time and/or powerful food—and a dry, chalky finish. Like most 2023s, it has lower alcohol, 13% in this case, and good acidity and freshness that provide balance. 1,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023. This is an impressive debut.
