Description

The Wine Advocate:

A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Mazzei 2023 Concerto di Fonterutoli is presented in a heavy bottle and shows impressive blackness and thickly concentrated fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon serves to kick this wine forward in a different direction, adding dark fruit, structure and depth to the brighter Sangiovese profile. This is a full-bodied wine with fine tannins and plenty of richness and power. Fruit comes from the Concerto vineyard in Fonterutoli at 350 meters in elevation on rocky soils formed by decomposed alberese and galestro. The varieties age separately for 18 months in French oak (tonneaux for Sangiovese and barriques for Cabernet Sauvignon) followed by three months in cement.

Falstaff:

A gently shimmering, dark ruby red. An alluring bouquet of dark berries, undergrowth, and a slight balsamic note, along with licorice, unfolding in many layers. More direct, yet no less beautiful on the palate, with full fruit wrapped in a chocolate coating; everything is very harmonious and well-rounded, right through to the very long finish.

Decanter:

A fantastic Concerto. Fragrant rose petals and savoury garrigue herbs, some leather, tobacco, chocolate, cherry and damson fruit too. Razor sharp and lifted with the most delicious dollop of strawberry juice with high acidity that instantly lifts the palate despite such complex flavours. Layered and multi faceted, this is a party in a glass and is such a crowd pleaser. I love the slightly chaky, grainy tannins and the plentiful massy fruit feel. Ripe and generous with a playful attitude. Out to please. Even after a week this wine held up and was still so enjoyable. An amazing food wine. It maybe doesn't reach the heights of the exceptional 2021 with it’s purity and definition ,but this is extremely well made and so easy to enjoy.

James Suckling:

A firm and silky red with blackberry, black olive, blackcurrant and crushed stone aromas. Iodine and oyster shell undertones, Medium-bodied with pretty flavors of dark fruit and chocolate. Crunchy and firm. 80% sangiovese and 20% cabernet sauvignon. Needs a few years to come together. Drink after 2027.
