Description
Valdafoz est un vin issu d’une single vineyard unique, provenant d’une petite vallée isolée orientée vers le nord-est, dans la commune de Corullón. Il s’agit d’un vignoble extrême, fruit d’une viticulture héroïque, planté sur des coteaux vertigineux aux sols de schiste pur, qui, entre les mains d’Álvaro Palacios, donne naissance à un vin qui est un véritable chef-d’œuvre. Un rouge qui allie une concentration naturelle impressionnante à la fraîcheur atlantique et à la richesse fruitée caractéristiques des grands Mencías.

It was interesting to taste again the 2023 Valdafoz (which they didn't bottle in 2022) next to the new Al Chelo, as Al Chelo also comes from the Valdafoz paraje of Corullón. This is a single-vineyard wine that's sold exclusively to Barcelona wine merchant Vila Viniteca. It comes from a very steep north-facing plot at 700 meters above sea level and is not produced every year. It fermented with some full clusters in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and had 39 days of maceration. It was bottled after 10 months in barrique with 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.78. It's mostly Mencía with around 5% white grapes. This part is northwest-facing, and Al Chelo is pure north. The two wines have a similar character, but this is a little gentler and riper, with the stony, herbal and cooler side of the 2023s. This is slightly darker and with a little more weight. It has very fine tannins and amazing balance, finishing with a high-pitched, fresh note. 795 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025.
Made exclusively for Spanish retailer Vila Viniteca, Valdafoz is a high altitude paraje at 700m so is harvested late. It also lies in the shadow of the afternoon sun so is a cooler vineyard site. Mencía with a unique personality, it is quite muscular and intense with a defined herbal character. Mint, thyme and balsamic aromas lead to a dark and seductive palate with dried fig and black cherry. It is both fleshy and fresh, and finishes with an appealing touch of black pepper.
