Description

Decanter:

Although most of David and Nadia Sadie’s Chenin Blancs grow on granite, Skaliekop comes from an unusual outcrop of shale next to the Plat’bos vineyard. It delivers a very different expression, despite only a narrow track separating the two vineyards. Where Plat’bos is exuberant, Skaliekop is shy; where Plat’bos bursts with energy, Skaliekop offers intrigue. A teasingly introverted nose of olive and green plum gradually opens to something almost reminiscent of Cape Semillon with lime and gooseberry, yellow grapefruit, a hint of Vaseline, and a touch of wood spice on the intense, resonant palate, which concludes in a persistent finish. Enigmatic with a linear profile, this is nonetheless seamless and balanced, and will develop greater richness with bottle age – even if it is currently less immediate and accessible than Plat’bos. The Wine Advocate:

Perhaps the most open-knit and waxy of the lineup, the 2022 Skaliekop Chenin Blanc displays breadth, but it doesn’t have the same depth as previous vintages. The palate is slightly clipped with a medium-bodied expression and offers a spicy, mineral essence before ending with a rocky, mineral-laced finish. It should go at least 10 years, maybe longer.
