Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2023
Description

A blend of 44% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, the Ornellaia 2023 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia shows a nicely concentrated appearance and balanced aromas from what was ultimately a very strong vintage. The 2023 growing season saw pressure from downy mildew, but steady coastal winds helped keep the fruit healthy. A dry August followed by a rain-free September allowed for even ripening on the estate’s reddish sand and clay soils. Harvest was carefully timed to avoid the risk of over-ripeness, resulting in a wine with rich fruit, a velvety texture and impressive concentration. (The overripe fruit appears in the entry-level Le Volte dell'Ornellaia instead.) The tannins are refined and seamlessly integrated with no hard edges, while freshness on the finish balances the weight of fruit. (Monica Larner)
A gentle and elegant wine with aromas of spices, milk chocolate, vanilla, milk, mint, graphite and dark fruit. Silky and velvety on the palate, with ripe tannins, crisp acidity, a full body, clove flavors and amazing complexity. Drink or hold. (Aldo Fiordelli)
Dark, deep ruby red colour with a core. The nose opens delicately and discreetly with black cherry, sugared notes, later clearly blood orange, very elegant. The palate opens wide, emphasising the fruit, with a strong palate drive, striking and clear. Very well integrated tannins guarantee a good drinking flow. Retronasal mocha and cocoa flavours. Long-lasting finish with a fine tannin structure.
Sea spray, salty savoury, herbal notes on the nose with some fresh blackcurrant scents. Juicy and clean but still concentrated and relatively full in the mouth. I like the cooling blueberry touch alongside ripe cherries with a soft dusting of cocoa powder, liquorice and tobacco as well as a real salinity on the finish. A combination of power and finesse. 8% Petit Verdot completes the blend. (Georgina Hindle)
