L'avis des experts
This is the first vintage of this low-yielding (10hl/ha) Grenache-dominated wine from sandy, limestone-clay soils. The grapes are destemmed and co-fermented, then the wine is aged for 15 months in two-year-old barrels. It has complex notes of red fruit, baked earth and garrigue. There's sweetness from the Grenache but also a lithe feel. It's rounded but harmonious, with a long finish, avoiding any excess. Drinking Window 2019-2026. (James Lawther MW)
A co-fermented blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, the 2016 Corbières La Madone spent 15 months in second use barrels. It's a ripe, open-knit wine loaded with berry fruit, notes of dried spices and vanilla and hints of garrigue-like flowers and herbs. While one might wish for more concentration and ageability in a wine selling for $70 per bottle, it's a solid, well-made offering that should provide plenty of pleasure over the next several years.
