Vignoble et élaboration

Description
Vignoble situé au nord de l'appellation Pauillac, à la limite de Saint-Estèphe. Il bénéficie d'un excellent drainage et d'une exposition optimale au soleil.

Profond, composé de graviers fins mélangés à du sable éolien sur un sous-sol calcaire d'origine tertiaire.

35 hectolitres par hectare.
Vendanges
Vendanges manuelles effectuées du 31 août au 24 septembre. Seuls 40 % des raisins récoltés ont été utilisés pour l'élaboration du grand vin du millésime 2022.
Vinification
Elle est effectuée avec une extrême précision. La répartition des raisins dans des cuves en bois, en inox et en béton est déterminée en fonction des caractéristiques de chaque parcelle et du degré de maturité des raisins. La fermentation alcoolique a lieu à température contrôlée avec des remontages réguliers afin d'extraire en douceur tous les composés phénoliques. Chaque cuve est surveillée de près et des dégustations quotidiennes permettent de déterminer le moment optimal pour le soutirage. La période de macération dure environ 22 jours. Après la fermentation malolactique, les vins sont transférés dans des fûts de chêne français. Lafite possède sa propre tonnellerie à Pauillac, la Tonnerie des Domaines, qui contribue au style unique de ses vins. Le contenu de chaque fût est dégusté et seuls les meilleurs sont sélectionnés pour l'assemblage final.
Elevage
Rouge crianza entre 18 et 20 mois dans des fûts de chêne français, 100 % neufs.

The Wine Advocate:

In bottle, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild has turned out even better than I anticipated. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, minty blackcurrants, violets and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, with a deep, enveloping core of lively fruit, beautifully refined tannins, and a long, perfumed finish. Even at this early stage, it's remarkably integrated and harmonious, and it's certainly the most elegant of the first growths this year, reminding me of a modern-day version of Lafite's magical 1953.

James Suckling:

A benchmark modern Lafite showing tobacco, orange peel, cedar, pencil shavings, violets and cigar box—so perfumed. Medium-bodied with lots of graphite, stone and hints of redcurrants on the palate. It goes on for minutes. Reminds me of Lafites that I love made decades ago. Could be the great 1986. A blend of 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Best after 2030 but already fascinating.

This is a magnificent wine with a dark chocolate aroma and great complexity and density. Its power and solid tannins along with black plum flavors are long-lasting as will be the wine. Drink from 2029.

The 2022 Château Lafite-Rothschild is based on 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot that was harvested between the 31st of August and the 24th of September. It's a richer, more opulent wine compared to the more classic 2020 (although the pH is higher in the 2020) and has a deep, full-bodied, concentrated profile as well as classic Lafite aromatics of spicy red and black fruits, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and tobacco. Deep, rich, and concentrated, it nevertheless stays pure and flawlessly balanced, with ample, ripe tannins and a great finish. It's going to have some up-front appeal by Lafite standards but should still require a decade of bottle age. Director Eric Koher compares this to the 2005, but this modern-day clone of the 1959 is one of the most powerful, concentrated Lafites I've tasted.
