Très expressif, avec des arômes de fruits rouges (framboise, cerise) entremêlés de notes très fraîches de menthe, de feuille de tabac blond et d'épices douces

Il s'ouvre sur un équilibre et une texture douce et délicate, en parfaite harmonie. Un beau corps, un volume magnifique et une belle longueur, le tout soutenu par une fraîcheur éclatante.

Climat
Un millésime légèrement plus frais que les précédents, avec un hiver plus doux et un printemps plus frais qui ont créé des conditions très favorables au mildiou d'avril à juin. Les mois de juillet et août ont sauvé la récolte, en stoppant le mildiou, en asséchant les sols, en provoquant un arrêt de la croissance de la vigne et en marquant ainsi le passage à la phase de maturation, ce qui a favorisé la qualité des raisins. Les températures et les précipitations estivales moyennes ont entraîné un stress hydrique modéré, bénéfique à la maturation. Il convient de souligner que le mois de septembre a enregistré des températures inférieures de 20 % à la moyenne des 25 dernières années, ce qui a influencé le style du Millésime, rafraîchissant et très fruité.

James Suckling:

A fresh, complex and deep nose of spiced blue fruit, waxberries, blue flowers, minerals, licorice and graphite. Full-bodied and really fine-grained, with tight, chalky tannins and a long, structured finish. Very juicy and complete, with excellent fruit definition and an al dente texture. More reactive tannins this year. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

Tim Atkin:

Saturated purple fruit with floral aromas and chalky cassis complexity and great intensity. This shows of the work in the vineyard guarding - with biodynamic principles -against the mildew, as well as the concentration of low yields and the commensurate work by Fabien Teitgen and his team in the winery. Lush palate flooding flavour, fine and ripe tannins, great freshness and ample fruit and complexity. Really terrific vintage- defying wine this year.

Decanter:

Dark fruit and soft rose aromatics, neat and tidy scents. A lovely juicy, fun expression from Smith this year with a dollop of sweet ripe fruit with cooling acidity and fine tannins. Definitely not demonstrative, this is about the precision rather than power or density but it’s graceful and long with focus and charm. Not trying too hard, this is sinewy with a soft fleshiness and really mineral-edged finish that adds tension - liquorice, slate, graphite and pencil lead. Harmonious and balanced. This leans into the vintage. Good construction and energy. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 60% new oak barrels. 3.6pH. (Georgina Hindle)

Falstaff:

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the edge. Delicate notes of blackberries, a hint of liquorice, still a little shy, a hint of fine oak, red berry nuances. Complex, fine red cherries, fresh acidity, mineral and salty, firm finish, fine cassis notes in the aftertaste, has good ageing potential. (Peter Moser)

The Grand Vin 2024 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested between September 18 and October 9. Resting in 60% new barrels, it's a deep purple-hued wine with classic aromas of dark currants, smoky tobacco, graphite, and spicy, wood-driven nuances. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Pessac-Léognan with ripe, velvety tannins, a dense mid-palate, and outstanding length. It's one of the few 2024s that will benefit from bottle age.

Vinous:

The 2024 Smith Haut Lafitte was picked from September 18 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak. It has an understated bouquet that I appreciate, with scents of blackberry, raspberry, light rose petal and India ink that gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, extremely well balanced and very refined, with a linear and correct finish. This is a classy Smith Haut Lafitte that will provide up to 20 years of drinking pleasure. (Neal Martin)

Notes of spices, oak, dark berries and gentian preface the 2024 Smith Haut Lafitte, a medium-bodied, firm and structured wine with an assertive tannic frame that leads to a compact, gentian-inflected finish. This blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in 60% new oak, is somewhat introverted and linear, making it a chewy Smith Haut Lafitte that will need time to unwind.
