Cap Maritime Chardonnay 2019
Description

Gottried Mocke uses a combination of new wood and foudres on this appealing Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley Chardonnay, which combines oak sweetness and toast with citrus and stone fruit flavours and a pithy, stony finish. The wood needs a little more time to integrate. 2022-24.
A vibrant, refined chardonnay with dried mango, spiced apple, burnt lemon and clove on the nose, as well as some ash and praline. Medium-to full-bodied, tight and layered with a spicy and toasty edge. Sustainable. Drink now or hold.
Matchstick and hay notes on the nose give way to a lush and creamy range of baked white peach, ripe Jonagold apple and chopped hazelnut flavors on the palate of this expressive white, with a hint of lemon curd. Round and medium-bodied, with a fresh backbone of acidity providing fine focus and definition throughout. Drink now through 2024.
The 2019 Chardonnay begins with a bright nose overflowing with aromas of sweet citrus, yellow apple and seductive French oak nuances of baking spices. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively and energetic, delivering a food-friendly expression across the mid-palate before ending with a delightfully long finish. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, then underwent spontaneous fermentation. The wine aged for 14 months in 50% new French oak barrels. 4,500 bottles were filled.
