The Wine Advocate:

A new top-of-the-range Mencía, the 2019 El Castañal is a Vino de Paraje Valdaiga and was made with hand-destemmed grapes from a vineyard that names the wine. There is exceptional fruit here, but unfortunately, the wine is encapsulated in creamy oak and is ripe with 14.5% alcohol and moderate acidity. The 14 months in brand-new small barrels smothers the delicate character and perfume of Mencía. Maybe with more time in bottle? Only 515 bottles were filled in July 2021.
