Rancio Dulce Dom Berenguer Solera 1918

L'avis des experts
One of the old wines I had not encountered before is the NV Rancio Dulce Dom Berenger Solera 1918, an old, intense, dense and nutty style of sweet rancio fortified to 20% alcohol. This is a wine from yesteryear, from old soleras fed with Garnacha and aged for many years in barrels in an oxidative way. It's fortified to retain some unfermented sugar. The nose has good complexity and intensity, caramelized orange peel, nuts, ginger, spices and a touch of volatility. The palate is intense and pungent, with integrated sweetness. It's more intense, darker and nuanced than the excellent dry Dom Juncosa Rancio Seco Solera 1939 I tasted next to it. It has plenty of raisin and date notes, coupled with some burnt sugar and roasted coffee notes. Quite unique and delicious.
