Clon de la Familia 2011

I tasted again the top-of-the-range 2011 Clon de la Familia, pure Tempranillo from three vineyards that were planted with the original Tempranillo clone from their old family vineyards on the three different soils they have: clay, chalk and stone. Packing 15.8% alcohol and bottled after 15 to 20 months in French oak barrels, it's like a blast from the past: super ripe, extracted and oaky. It is especially noticeable when tasting this next to newer vintages, where it seems like they have moderated the ripeness, extraction and oak. The nose is dominated by oak-related aromas, and the flavors are similar, coupled with plenty of dusty tannins and a dry finish. This is overtly oaky and ripe, for fans of the style. I'm now in doubt if the oak is ever going to integrate or if the fruit is going to fade before that. A bit of a question mark. I find it increasingly more difficult to find occasions to drink wines like this, but I'm sure others can. The price seems delirious. 993 bottles were filled in January 2014. - Luis Gutiérrez.
